From residue to renewable fuel

Anaerobic digestion is a natural biological process in which microorganisms break down organic biomass in an oxygen-free environment to produce biogas. The biogas is purified into Compressed Biogas, while the remaining digestate becomes nutrient-rich biofertilizer.

Compressed Biogas (CBG) is a renewable fuel produced by converting agricultural residues and organic waste into high-purity biomethane through anaerobic digestion. Similar in composition to CNG, CBG can be used in vehicles, industries and commercial applications while significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. Sai Bioenergy develops CBG projects that also produce nutrient-rich biofertilizer, creating a circular renewable energy ecosystem.

Although CBG and CNG have similar properties and can often be used interchangeably, they come from different sources. CNG is a fossil fuel extracted from natural gas reserves, while CBG is a renewable fuel produced from agricultural biomass and organic waste. By replacing fossil-based CNG with renewable CBG, industries and transport operators can reduce carbon emissions while supporting a circular economy.

Sai Bioenergy uses a wide range of renewable biomass feedstocks, including agricultural residues, crop waste, cattle dung, food waste and other organic materials suitable for anaerobic digestion. By converting locally available biomass into renewable fuel, these feedstocks help reduce open-field burning, improve waste management and create additional value for farming communities.

Dimethyl Ether (DME) is a clean-burning alternative fuel that can replace diesel and LPG in selected industrial and commercial applications. Produced from renewable feedstocks, Renewable DME offers lower emissions, high combustion efficiency and strong potential for decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors. Sai Bioenergy is expanding its renewable fuel portfolio to include DME as part of its long-term clean energy strategy.

Compressed Biogas is suitable for a wide range of industries, including transportation, logistics, manufacturing, food processing, commercial operations and industrial heating. Because CBG has properties similar to CNG, it can often be integrated into existing gas-based systems with minimal changes, helping organisations reduce emissions while transitioning to cleaner renewable fuel.
